Thrifty Thursday...

It's been such a long time since I have shared a Thrifty Thursday post, so I thought it was time to share a little of what I have found while thrifting lately. I still frequent my favourite Op shops regularly, but am very careful with what I bring home, cause we are running out of room!

Several weeks ago, it was a rainy Sunday and there was a little fair on in our little town. These fairs are regular events throughout the year and usually just have open Op shops and stalls from people from the community. I almost stayed home, however decided to pop down for a quick look.

I am SO glad I did. The first stall I saw was from a lady I knew who taught me folk art painting when I was pregnant with Emily. Her stall was FULL of gorgeous vintage china and pieces that I adored. I wandered over and my eyes fell upon a sight that made me gasp.

Here's what I saw -

Aren't they divine! I couldn't get over to the stall quickly enough, these little deer salt and pepper shakers had to be mine! They were marked at $5 and still had their original cork stopers in them, so I quickly told the stall holder that I would buy them. Then my eyes fell on this -

A matching little deer vase. How gorgeous is that little baby with it's mother. And at $5 it came home with me too. It was LOVE at first sight.

So with excitement I went to pay my $10 for these gorgeous deers when my eyes fell on one more piece. Oh my, I could hardly contain myself.

This one is a wall vase and at $5 it came home with me too. I ADORE all of my little deer pieces and will continue to hunt for some additional pieces to add to my little collection. I think I will collect kitchy wall vases too, as I already have an apple one - so much fun!

Is there anything that makes you gasp when you see it in an Op shop? For me, there are SO many things, but at the moment, these little deers make my heart flutter.

Thrifty Thursday...

I've had to cut back a little on my Op shopping lately, our tiny home is bursting at the seams and I have been busy with school holidays and working. However, during the school holidays the kids and I had a lovely day out and about with my Mum and Aunty. We all enjoy Op shopping so happily popped into a few stores and had a lovely day of shopping together.

We found a few gorgeous goodies to bring home. I thought you might like to see them...

Firstly, we went to an Op shop that was FULL of what lots of people would call junk. It is actually called something like a Garage sale store - and was fun to rummage around and see what we could find. We are always on the lookout for a vintage Kenner, so can't pass Op shops very easily.

While wandering around, I spotted this little framed tapestry. I was really drawn to the colours but more than that I was sad that someone's hard work had ended up in a junk store.

I flipped it over and saw that there was a label glued on the back.

My mind instantly started to think about Ena, and who's mother, aunt, sister, friend, grandmother she may be/have been. Upon discovering that this tapestry was for sale for $2 I just knew I had to bring it home. This tapestry is going to be the first of a wall of art that I have planned for my home, and I plan to hang it with pride and to honour Ena Turner too.

Next to the tapestry (in the first photo) are a pair of bottles that I recently bought at my local Op shop for $1 each. I have since found out that they are dutch beer bottles. I think that is so funny considering I don't drink, and I have beer bottles on my mantle. I do love the colour, so for now, they will stay.

Also at the same junky Op shop, not too far from the tapestry I saw a box of frames. I decided to have a look through and found this small print. I don't know what it was about it, maybe the vintage, heavy frame or that fact that it looks like a happy grandma playing music, but I needed to bring it home too. The second piece for my art wall I think.

The artists name was Dobey I think. I tried to google the name to see if I could find out any information about Dobey, but couldn't find anything. So I am going to make up my own little story in my mind. One day I might pop the wooden back off the print and see if anything is hiding inside, it's pretty heavy so you just never know!

Upon wandering around a little more, I glanced up to a high shelf and this hat box shaped suitcase caught my eye (the check fabric on the right). We pulled it off the shelf and saw that it was $5, and as soon as Emily saw it, she was super excited and we decided to bring it home. We discovered once we had it home that there was a matching smaller bag inside - bonus!

We headed across the road to another store, that sells more upmarket goods, furniture, china, old records etc. As soon as we walked inside, Emily and I spotted a vintage makeup case - and it was aqua! I think we both gasped at the same time. Upon closer inspection we saw that it was $35, much more expensive than we usually spend at an Op shop, but my dear Aunty offered to buy it for Emily, so we happily popped it into the car too.

We headed off for some lunch together and then home with happy hearts. We had spent a wonderful day together, found some gorgeous goodies, and spent time with family. We all decided we needed to have more days like this - I am already looking forward to the next one. xx Janelle
