For one person in our family. Let me back track a little and share this story with you.
Early in December on a normal Monday afternoon, Jasper and I headed into town to grab a few supplies from our little local fabric store. On our way through town, Jasper saw a sign outside our friends pet store that said Pug X. At Jasper's prompting and just before closing time, we turned the car around and headed in for a little look.
You see, for as long as I can remember Emily has wanted a pug. We had also been toying with the idea of getting a playmate for our dog Kewell, so it was lots of curiosity that I wanted to see what these Pug x puppies were like. As we headed into the store, we were greeted by two little faces. One looking very much like a Pug and another scruffy little puppy. Both very excited to see us and keen for some cuddles. Our friends run a wonderful store, where their animals are very well cared for and loved, so I knew that if we did decide to adopt one of these puppies, it would be coming from a good background. We asked lots of questions and found out these little puppies were 12 weeks old and were Pug (their dad was pure pug), crossed with Jack Russel and Shih Tzu. The little pug looking boy puppy quickly drew our attention and worked his way into our hearts.
Hubby and I had decided that this Christmas we would keep it simple and have one main present for our kids, so my mind got to ticking. This little boy could be the perfect surprise present for Emily. So Jasper and I headed home, and I braved the subject with hubby. The timing wasn't perfect as we still don't have walls in our home and throwing a puppy into the mix probably wasn't the best thing for us at the moment, but this little guy wouldn't leave my thoughts. After a few days of thinking and planning, and with some financial help from family members, the decision was made to surprise Emily with her very own pug puppy. A dream come true for her.
On the Thursday afternoon of the same week, I picked the kids up from school and casually told them we had to head into town to pick something up. Jasper cottoned on pretty quickly as to what we were up to, but Emily was curious because I was being so cryptic. As we neared our destination, we told Emily to close her eyes. We pulled up and led her into the store, still with her eyes closed. We walked her to the back of the store and she opened her eyes to see two little puppies looking up at her - one very pug looking little boy in particular. I wish you could have seen the look on her face when I told her he could be hers if she wanted. I honestly think it took her a few minutes to even comprehend that her dream really was coming true.
We let Emily have the very first hold of this new little boy and you should have seen him. He wrapped his little arms around her neck and gave her the biggest hug. It was the sweetest thing and the reassurance that I needed. I had no doubt that these two were meant to be together.
After chatting with our friend and getting all the instructions on how to care for this new little boy, we gathered together all of his new supplies and headed home. The smile on Emily's face was HUGE and I honestly think she thought she was in a dream. Our first stop on the way home was at the vet for a quick check up and vaccination. He was a dream puppy. He cuddled up to his new little mummy and fell fast asleep.
After the all clear from the vet, we headed home ready to introduce this little guy to the rest of the family. His little feet didn't touch the ground very much for the rest of the day and I am pretty confident in saying that he loved every minute of all the cuddles he received.
After lots of cuddles and introductions to furry and human family members, this little guy had a big nap in his new bed.
After trialing lots of different names, Emily ended up calling him Pugsley. I think it suits him perfectly. He really is the best little puppy ever and is such a pleasure to have around. He is a smart little guy who is so willing to learn and to please and has already learnt so many things. Our lives are richer for having him as part of our family now too. Emily is the perfect little Mummy, making sure he is taken care of in the best of her ability and he knows how loved he is too. He adores her. It's a perfect match and I for one are thrilled we happened upon him on that Monday afternoon. It was meant to be.
Here's a little Pugsley cuteness to start your day. You're welcome!
On the same afternoon that we surprised Emily with Pugsley, she brought home her books from school as it was one of her last days at school for the year. As I opened her art folio, the very first thing I saw was this. I couldn't believe my eyes. She had spent time throughout the year drawing a gorgeous little pug, not knowing that one day she would have one of her very own. Further proof this little guy was destined to be hers.
So there you have the story of Pugsley, the newest member of our family and a much loved little boy. I just know these two will be best friends for many years to come.
